Huawei Mate 80 Pro Hands-On: Huawei’s Latest Imaging Flagship Arrives in Malaysia

Huawei Malaysia has officially unveiled the Huawei Mate 80 Pro in Kuala Lumpur, introducing the brand’s latest flagship smartphone alongside the “See, Truly Malaysia” campaign in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia and the announcement of the Huawei XMAGE Awards 2026.

Positioned as Huawei’s most advanced Mate device to date, the Mate 80 Pro focuses on three key pillars — powerful mobile imaging, enhanced durability and intelligent performance, while maintaining the premium design language that the Mate series is known for.

During the launch event, the device was showcased through several interactive photography stations, allowing attendees to experience its camera capabilities and design up close.

Premium Design with Huawei’s Signature Camera Identity

The Huawei Mate 80 Pro continues Huawei’s iconic Dual Space Ring camera design, a symmetrical camera module that has become a defining visual element of the Mate series.

The device feels solid and refined, with a vegan fibre back panel that provides a textured tactile finish while improving grip compared with conventional glass backs. This material also contributes to a more durable construction while maintaining a premium appearance.

Available in Gold, Green and Black, the colour options are inspired by natural elements and reflect the elegant aesthetic associated with Huawei’s flagship lineup.

Durability is another highlight of the Mate 80 Pro. The device is protected by 2nd Generation Kunlun Glass, which incorporates high-strength nanocrystals designed to improve resistance against drops and impacts. Huawei claims the glass is up to 20 times stronger than conventional glass panels.

In addition, the phone offers IP68 water resistance up to 6 metres and IP69 protection against high-temperature and high-pressure water jets, reinforcing its position as a durable premium flagship.

Advanced Triple-Camera System

Imaging remains the centrepiece of the Huawei Mate 80 Pro, featuring a versatile triple-camera system designed to cover multiple photography scenarios.

The system includes:

  • 50MP Ultra Lighting Camera with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor

  • 48MP Ultra Lighting Telephoto Macro Lens with 4× optical zoom

  • 40MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera

This setup allows the device to capture a wide range of scenes, from expansive landscapes to detailed close-up shots.

Huawei also integrates its True-to-Colour Camera System, designed to maintain accurate colours and tonal balance across different lighting conditions. During demonstrations at the launch event, the camera produced photos that preserved natural textures and lifelike tones even in challenging indoor lighting environments.

The 48MP telephoto macro lens stood out as a particularly versatile feature, allowing detailed close-up shots while still offering optical zoom capabilities for distant subjects.

I Photography for Smarter Shooting

The Huawei Mate 80 Pro introduces several intelligent photography features designed to simplify the shooting process.

One of the most notable additions is AI Composition, which analyses scenes in real time and provides framing guidance directly within the viewfinder. By evaluating elements such as subject positioning, lines and lighting, the system suggests optimal cropping or zoom levels to help produce well-balanced photos.

Other AI-powered features include:

  • AI Remove – removes unwanted objects or people from the background

  • AI Best Expression – automatically selects the best facial expressions from multiple shots to produce the ideal group photo

These tools aim to make professional-looking photography more accessible without requiring extensive manual adjustments.

Improved Cooling and Intelligent Performance

Performance is supported by Huawei’s SuperCool Dual Phase Change Heat Dissipation System, designed to manage heat more efficiently during intensive tasks.

Compared with traditional cooling solutions, the system improves thermal conductivity efficiency by 16% and reduces the temperature rise rate by 33%, helping to maintain stable performance during activities such as gaming, multitasking and extended camera use.

Expanding Huawei’s Smart Ecosystem

Alongside the Mate 80 Pro, Huawei also introduced several additions to its connected device ecosystem.

These include:

  • Huawei FreeBuds Pro 5 – featuring a dual-driver acoustic system with high-resolution lossless audio and AI noise cancellation

  • Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 in a new Green finish with enhanced golf tracking capabilities

  • Huawei FreeClip 2 in Rose Gold with its distinctive open-ear design for all-day comfort

Together, these devices expand Huawei’s ecosystem, enabling seamless connectivity across productivity, entertainment and everyday lifestyle experiences.

XMAGE Awards and the “See, Truly Malaysia” Campaign

The launch also marks the introduction of the “See, Truly Malaysia” photography campaign in partnership with Tourism Malaysia, celebrating the country’s landscapes, culture and heritage through smartphone photography.

At the same time, Huawei announced the Huawei XMAGE Awards 2026, which will run from 23 March to 16 August 2026. The competition invites users to submit photos that showcase authentic stories and visual narratives through Huawei’s imaging technology.

The Huawei Mate 80 Pro continues Huawei’s tradition of pushing smartphone imaging forward while maintaining a strong focus on premium design and durability.

Its advanced triple-camera system, enhanced AI photography tools and durable construction position it as a compelling flagship option for users who prioritise mobile photography and high-end craftsmanship.

Retailing at RM3,999, the Mate 80 Pro is now open for pre-orders in Malaysia with promotional gifts worth up to RM2,115, including the Huawei MatePad 11.5 and several Huawei Premium Services benefits.
