Sony A6700: Elevating Photography to Extraordinary Heights

In Sony’s extensive lineup of cameras, the APS-C range often takes a backseat to the full-frame releases. Breaking the hiatus since 2019, the Sony Alpha A6700 emerges as the latest addition to the A6000 series, positioned as an upgraded successor to the Alpha A6600. Priced at RM 7,099 for the body-only option, RM 7,799 with the compact 16-50mm zoom kit lens, or RM 9,199 with the E 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS lens, the A6700 targets photography enthusiasts and videographers seeking a feature-rich camera that combines portability and affordability. Boasting the latest technology, this model aims to stand out as one of Sony’s most impressive cameras to date.

The A6700 introduces a 26MP BSI CMOS sensor, marking Sony’s first foray into APS-C cameras with a resolution surpassing the 24MP benchmark. While the necessity of such high resolutions is debatable, Sony ensures that the A6700 is more than just about sensor resolution. Packed with cutting-edge features like sophisticated subject detection autofocus and 4K 120fps video recording, the camera promises a compelling package for enthusiasts.

Design Overhaul:
In terms of design, the A6700 reimagines the outdated body of its predecessors while retaining the recognizable styling of the A6000 series. Although not the sleekest-looking camera, it weighs a mere 17.5 ounces (500 grams), making it highly portable. The redesign includes a welcome addition of a third control dial on the front, providing improved handling. The wider grip, accommodating the “Z” type battery, is another thoughtful change borrowed from the full-frame Sony Alpha A7C.

Ergonomics and Controls:
Addressing previous concerns about control layouts, the A6700 brings significant improvements. The addition of an electronic front control dial below the shutter button enhances ease of use. The AF-ON button replaces the A6600’s fiddly AE/AF controller, and the video button finds a more convenient placement on the top plate. The touchscreen functionality is notably improved, offering quicker access to menus and settings through on-screen touch buttons.

Features and Improvements:
The A6700 incorporates features inspired by the full-frame Sony Alpha A7C, enhancing the user experience. It introduces the MI Shoe for add-on flash units and on-camera video microphones, the familiar NP-FZ100 battery with USB-C recharging, and a single UHS-II SD card slot for easier access. Connectivity options include stereo microphone and headphone sockets, USB-C, and micro-HDMI ports. While offering a range of APS-C E-mount lenses, the camera is also compatible with a broader selection of full-frame optics.

Autofocus Capabilities:
Benefiting from Sony’s latest auto-focusing technology, the A6700 excels in subject detection, seamlessly transitioning between eyes, faces, and torsos. The real-time subject detection system recognizes humans, animals, birds, insects, cars/trains, and airplanes, making it one of the most effective auto-focusing cameras available.

Performance and Image Quality:
Equipped with a 26MP BSI-CMOS sensor and Bionz XR processor, the A6700 delivers a sensitivity range of ISO 100-32,000. Continuous shooting at 11fps with a 59-frame raw buffer showcases its capabilities. The improved autofocus system with 759 phase-detection points enhances performance in low light conditions. The in-body stabilization, combined with a robust FZ100 battery, ensures impressive stamina. The camera’s improved auto white balance produces attractive JPEGs with lifelike and natural colors.

In practical use, the A6700 stands out as a highly capable camera, consistently delivering appealing images. While the electronic shutter allows for silent shooting, it comes with rolling shutter distortion during fast movements. The robust FZ100 battery provides impressive endurance, and the in-body stabilization proves valuable in low-light conditions. Compared to its predecessor, the A6700 offers a more ergonomic design, excellent video capabilities, and addresses previous issues like rolling shutter susceptibility, making it a worthwhile investment for enthusiasts.
