Sony A7 V Hands-On Review at Bamboo Hills KL

Sony’s A7 series has always been positioned as the do-it-all full-frame mirrorless camera, and the Sony A7 V (A7M5) feels like the most refined version yet—especially when paired with the Sony G Master 20–70mm F4, a lens that turns out to be far more versatile than its spec sheet suggests.

To really put this combo to the test, I took it out for a real-world shoot at Bamboo Hills, Taman Bamboo Kuala Lumpur, focusing on its public spaces, architecture, greenery, and later, food photography at Locarasa Restaurant & Patisserie.

First Impressions: Compact, Balanced, Confidence-Inspiring

The moment you mount the 20–70mm F4 G Master onto the A7 V, the balance feels just right. Despite being a G Master lens, it doesn’t feel front-heavy, making it comfortable for extended walking around Bamboo Hills.

The 20mm wide end immediately stood out—it’s noticeably wider than the usual 24–70mm zoom, and at a place like Bamboo Hills where space, architecture, and greenery intertwine, that extra width matters more than you’d expect.

Landscape & Architecture Photography at Bamboo Hills (Public Area)

Wide-Angle Performance (20mm)

Bamboo Hills is a visually layered location— bamboo-lined walkways. Shooting at 20mm, the A7 V captured:

  • Expansive views without excessive distortion

  • Strong edge-to-edge sharpness, even wide open at f/4

  • Natural colour separation between greenery, wood textures, and concrete elements

The 33MP sensor provides enough resolution to crop slightly without losing detail, which is useful when reframing architectural lines or isolating specific design elements.

Dynamic Range & Exposure

Midday lighting at Bamboo Hills can be harsh, with bright skies and shaded walkways. This is where the A7 V shines:

  • Highlights in the sky were well preserved

  • Shadow details under trees and covered areas remained usable

  • Minimal need for exposure bracketing

Sony’s colour science has matured—greens look natural (not overly saturated), and the overall rendering feels more “real-life” than previous generations.

Autofocus & Subject Recognition in a Public Space

In a busy public area, the AI-powered autofocus proved incredibly reliable:

  • Quick subject lock when people walk through frames

  • Accurate face detection even when partially obscured by foliage

  • Smooth focus transitions for casual motion shots

For lifestyle and travel-style photography, this means you spend less time fighting focus and more time composing.

Food Photography at Locarasa Restaurant & Patisserie

Focal Length Sweet Spot (35–70mm)

When it came time to photograph food at Locarasa, the lens truly showed its flexibility.

At 35–50mm, it’s ideal for:

  • Overhead table shots

  • Contextual food images showing plating + surroundings

At 70mm, it’s perfect for:

  • Tight detail shots of pastries

Even at f/4, the background separation is surprisingly pleasing, especially at the longer end of the zoom. While it doesn’t replace an f/1.8 prime for extreme bokeh, it’s more than sufficient for editorial and review-style food photography.

Colour & Texture Rendering

The A7 V renders food colours accurately:

  • Warm tones of baked goods look inviting, not overly orange

  • Whites (plates, cream, pastries) remain clean

  • Fine textures—crumbs, glaze shine, steam—are well defined

This setup is especially suitable for restaurant reviews, where realism matters more than exaggerated blur.

Handling, Shooting Experience & Practical Use

In-Body Stabilisation (IBIS)

Walking through Bamboo Hills and shooting handheld, IBIS was consistently helpful:

  • Sharp images at slower shutter speeds

  • Stable framing for casual video clips

  • Less reliance on higher ISO

Battery Life

After a full session covering:

  • Landscape shots

  • Architecture

  • Food photography

  • Casual video clips

The battery still held up comfortably—ideal for half-day lifestyle shoots without anxiety.

Video Capabilities (Quick Notes)

While this outing focused mainly on stills, short video clips showed:

  • Smooth autofocus transitions

  • Natural skin tones

  • Excellent stabilisation when walking

For creators who shoot hybrid content (articles, reels, short clips), the A7 V fits seamlessly.
